UND Opens Varsity Esports Facility, Strengthening Academic and Competitive Ecosystem

The University of North Dakota (UND) has officially opened its Varsity Esports facility in Swanson Hall, marking a milestone for the university’s growing esports ecosystem. A ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 31 featured remarks from UND President Andrew Armacost, who emphasized the importance of a dedicated space for the team’s morale and identity.

The facility is positioned at the base of the Memorial Union’s Social Stairs, providing a central hub for esports athletes to practice and compete. Sandra Moritz, professor of education, health & behavior, highlighted the academic esports program’s career-oriented design, offering tracks in coaching, health, business, and internships.

Provost Eric Link reinforced the university’s commitment to esports, likening it to a "three-legged stool" comprising recreational gaming, varsity competition, and academics. He stressed the program’s role in fostering teamwork, leadership, and community.

Varsity athlete Ethan Taylor described the esports team as a diverse and supportive family, while Coach Ryan Kraus expressed gratitude for the new facility, which includes offices, classrooms, competition areas, and state-of-the-art gaming equipment.

The ribbon-cutting event coincided with a regional K-12 esports tournament hosted by Fenworks, whose founder, Kaleb Dschaak, underscored the role of higher education in advancing esports opportunities for students.
