OU Esports Launches Research Committee to Advance Collegiate Esports Studies
The University of Oklahoma’s Esports and Co-Curricular Innovation (ECCI) Department has established a new research committee to examine key trends and narratives in collegiate esports. Led by program director Mike “Moog” Aguilar and competition manager Joshua “Thumper” Riesenberg, the committee aims to standardize practices and fill research gaps in the rapidly growing field.
The initiative is distinguished by its multidisciplinary approach, setting it apart from prior esports studies that were often conducted in isolation or lacked a broad institutional framework. The committee’s first project, Exploring the Relationship Between Athletic Coping Skills and Sense of Belonging in Collegiate Esports Athletes, uses a comprehensive survey to analyze how coping strategies influence student engagement and retention.
Over the next 16 months, the committee plans to publish two peer-reviewed articles, two white papers, and two case studies. By involving faculty, students, and industry experts, OU hopes to position itself as a leader in esports research while contributing to the field’s academic maturity.
